Schengen Visa for Indian Passport Holders Living in the UAE: Applying From Dubai or Abu Dhabi

Millions of Indian passport holders live in the UAE, and a large share of them travel to Europe each year. The rule that surprises many is simple: you apply where you legally reside, not where your passport is from. An Indian citizen holding a valid UAE residence visa applies at the Schengen consulate in the UAE, through its centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and the file is assessed against a UAE life: UAE job, UAE bank, UAE address.

This guide covers who must apply in the UAE and who must apply in India, the residence-validity rule that catches people on renewal, the UAE-specific documents, and how the refusal picture differs from India.

Valid UAE residence visa, employed or on a family residence UAE Standard case

The jurisdiction rule cuts the other way too: an Indian resident in the UAE who flies to India for a holiday cannot use the trip to apply at a Delhi or Mumbai consulate. The consulate in India will ask for proof of residence in its district and refuse the file if you cannot show it.

The UAE document list

Everything in a standard file (see the checklist by profile) plus:

  • Passport and UAE residence visa page, with the validity rule above.
  • Emirates ID, front and back.
  • Employer NOC on letterhead, stating designation, salary, joining date, approved leave dates and that you will return to your post. Free-zone and mainland companies both issue these; the trade licence copy is sometimes requested for small employers.
  • UAE bank statements for 3 to 6 months, stamped by the bank or downloaded with the bank’s seal. Salary credits should match the NOC. Indian bank statements can be added as supporting evidence, not as the primary account.
  • Tenancy contract (Ejari or equivalent) or a utility bill as proof of address.
  • For dependants on a family residence: the sponsor’s documents (NOC, statements, Emirates ID) plus a sponsorship declaration, as for any sponsored applicant.

Ties are assessed in the UAE

The question “will this person return?” is answered against the country of residence. A permanent job with a NOC, a family living in the UAE, a tenancy, children in UAE schools, and a residence visa with long validity are the ties that matter. Property or family in India strengthens the picture but does not replace UAE ties; a resident with a cancelled job and only Indian ties is in a weak position, and consulates know that “return” for such an applicant may mean returning to India, not the UAE.

How the refusal picture differs

Consulates in the UAE process very large volumes of Indian, Pakistani, Filipino and other expatriate files, and refusal rates for applications lodged in the UAE have historically been higher than the global average, with 2024 losses on refused UAE applications reported at over Dh21 million in fees. The recurring reasons are the same as in India (funds, purpose, intention to return) with two UAE-specific additions: residence visas close to expiry, and salary in the NOC not matching bank credits (common where part of the salary is paid in cash). Both are checkable before you file.

Do

Renew the residence before applying if it is within four months of expiry. Make sure the NOC salary and the bank credits agree. Use UAE statements as the primary account. Apply at the centre for your emirate; Northern Emirates residents usually fall under Dubai.

Don’t

Apply in India during a home visit while resident in the UAE. Apply during a job change or grace period. Rely on Indian bank statements alone. Assume a Golden Visa waives the funds and bookings requirements.

Multi-entry visas for UAE residents

The April 2024 cascade rules for Indian nationals apply to Indians applying from India; consulates in the UAE apply their own local cascade practice, which is often generous to residents with a clean history and long residence. Two used Schengen visas in the previous three years is the common threshold for a longer multi-entry visa. Our cascade guide explains the India rule; ask the UAE consulate’s checklist for its version.

A note for families split between India and the UAE

A husband resident in the UAE and a wife resident in India apply in different countries, at different consulates, and receive independent decisions. Coordinate the itinerary and bookings so both files describe the same trip, and reference each other in the cover letters. Our family guide covers the India side.

Frequently asked questions

Can an Indian citizen living in Dubai apply for a Schengen visa in the UAE?

Yes, and must. A valid UAE residence visa makes the UAE your country of residence, and you apply at the Schengen consulate competent for your emirate through its centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

How long must my UAE residence visa be valid to apply?

Most consulates require at least three months of validity beyond your return date from Europe. Renew first if you are close to that limit.

Can I apply in India while I am there on holiday?

No. Consulates in India require proof of residence in their district. A UAE resident is refused at the counter or on jurisdiction grounds.

What documents are specific to UAE applicants?

Residence visa page, Emirates ID, UAE employer NOC with salary, UAE bank statements for 3 to 6 months, and a tenancy contract or utility bill as address proof.

Are refusal rates higher in the UAE?

Refusal rates for applications lodged in the UAE have historically been above the global average. The common causes are the same as in India, plus residence visas near expiry and NOC salaries that do not match bank credits.

I am on a UAE visit visa. Where do I apply?

In India, at the consulate for your Indian state of residence. Visit-visa holders are not UAE residents for Schengen purposes.
