Schengen Visa for Indians Living in the USA (H-1B, F-1, Green Card) 2026

Millions of Indians live in the US on H-1B, L-1, F-1 or green cards, and a Europe trip from the US is a very different application from one filed in India. You apply to the consulate responsible for where you live in the US, your US immigration status becomes a central document, and the providers and appointment systems are American, not VFS India.

Key points

  • Apply in the US, at the consulate (or its visa provider) covering your US state of residence, for the country of your main destination.
  • Your US status must outlast the trip. Consulates generally want to see that you can return to the US. Many look for status valid for at least three months after you leave Schengen.
  • Indian passport rules still apply: issued within the last 10 years and valid at least three months beyond your return.
  • Fee: €90 visa fee (paid in US dollars) plus the provider’s service charge.
  • Bonus: a valid US visa or green card also exempts you from Schengen airport transit visas where they still apply.

Where to apply

Under the EU Visa Code you apply to the Schengen country of your main destination (most nights, or first entry if equal), at its consulate whose jurisdiction covers your US place of residence. A consulate in New York will not normally accept an applicant who lives in Texas if a Houston or Chicago consulate covers Texas. Most Schengen countries outsource appointments in the US to a provider such as VFS Global, BLS International or TLScontact; a few take applications directly at the consulate. Check the official site of the country you are applying to.

Expired US visa stamp? Even if your US status is valid on your I-797, you need a valid visa stamp to fly back into the US after the trip (green card holders excepted). Consulates know this and may refuse if you cannot show how you will return. Sort the US stamp first.

The rest of the document list

  • Schengen application form, two photos (35×45 mm), Indian passport plus copies of old visas.
  • Round-trip flight reservation and hotel bookings or invitation.
  • Travel medical insurance with at least €30,000 cover valid across Schengen.
  • Recent US bank statements (usually three months) showing enough funds for the trip.
  • US tax returns or W-2 where requested.
  • A short cover letter with your itinerary.

Processing time and when to apply

The decision standard is 15 days from a complete application, up to 45 in individual cases. US appointment calendars are tight in spring and summer, so book as soon as your dates are firm. You can apply up to six months before travel. If you gave Schengen fingerprints within the last 59 months, you may not need to give them again, though many US providers still take them. Visiting India and Europe in one trip?

If you live in the US but will be in India before the Europe leg, you still apply where you legally reside: in the US. Applying from India while resident in the US is at the consulate’s discretion and often refused for jurisdiction reasons.
