Schengen Appointment Wait Times From India: How to Check Live Availability (2026)

“How long is the wait for a Schengen appointment?” has no single answer. It depends on the country, the city and, above all, the month. This guide shows you how to check real availability yourself in a few minutes, what wait times look like across the year, and how to widen your options when your city is full.

Seasonal pattern (reported for 2026)

  • October to March (off-peak): appointments are often available within 1–2 weeks, except around Christmas.
  • April to August (peak): reported waits of 45–60 days at busy centres. France and Italy showed almost no slots in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Bengaluru by April 2026.
  • What to do: for summer travel, book the appointment as soon as your dates are firm. You can apply up to six months before travel.

Figures as reported in March 2026 by Collegedunia, citing SchengenVisaSupport data from February 2026. Availability changes daily, so always check live.

How to check live availability in 5 steps

  1. Identify your consulate. It is the country where you spend the most nights (or first entry if equal). See which country to apply to.
  2. Find its provider. Most Schengen countries use VFS Global in India; Spain uses BLS International. Our VFS vs BLS guide lists them.
  3. Create an account on that country’s official VFS or BLS India website. Availability is only visible after login.
  4. Select the right category (tourism, business, family visit). The calendar differs by category.
  5. Check every centre you are allowed to use, and note the earliest date for each.

Which centres can you use?

Rule What it means
Germany You can book and submit at any VFS centre in India, regardless of where you live.
Most other countries Your state falls under a consulate’s jurisdiction (for example Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai or Kolkata). You can usually use any centre within that jurisdiction, not just the nearest one.
Wrong jurisdiction Submitting outside your jurisdiction can lead to the application being returned. Check the consulate’s jurisdiction map first.

Smaller cities in the same jurisdiction often have earlier dates than the metro centres. Collegedunia’s March 2026 report, for example, suggested checking Hyderabad for France and Italy when larger centres were full.

Tips that actually find slots

  • Check several times a day. Cancellations reappear at random times; new batches are often added weekly.
  • Be flexible by a few days. A slot a week earlier than you wanted is better than none.
  • Consider Prime Time or the Premium Lounge only when they show earlier dates. They do not speed up the decision. See VFS appointment types.
  • Business travellers to Germany can use the urgent categories for travel within four weeks. See Germany urgent business and trade fair appointments.
  • Never buy a slot from an agent or a Telegram group. Booked slots can be cancelled, and you risk your data and your file.
Do not change your main destination to chase a slot. If your itinerary says six nights in Italy, you must apply to Italy even if Greece has appointments tomorrow. Applying to the wrong consulate is a classic refusal reason (Article 32: purpose and conditions of stay not justified).

Planning calendar

Travel month Book appointment by

January to March 3–4 weeks before travel is usually enough.
