There is no express Schengen visa. No consulate in India sells faster processing for tourist applications, and the VFS premium lounge changes where you sit, not when you are decided. The legal standard is 15 calendar days from submission, extendable to 45 in individual cases. Everything an urgent applicant can do is about reaching that 15-day clock sooner and not resetting it.
This guide is for people with a wedding, a conference, a family emergency or a suddenly approved leave who need to know what is genuinely achievable, what the exceptions are, and which “urgent visa” offers are scams.
The honest numbers
- Fastest realistic door-to-door: about 3 weeks, if you submit a complete file within 5 days and the consulate decides in 15.
- Safe planning figure: 4 to 5 weeks, allowing for appointment scarcity and a possible document request.
- Legal minimum lead time: applications should be lodged at least 15 working days before the trip; most consulates will still accept later filings but nothing obliges them to decide in time.
- Genuine exceptions: humanitarian emergencies (serious illness or death of a close relative in Europe) and, at some consulates, documented business urgency. Weddings and holidays are not exceptions.
- Germany urgent business and trade fair appointments
- Christmas in Europe: when to apply

Why there is no express option
Schengen visas are decided under the EU Visa Code, which sets one processing standard for everyone. Consulates cannot sell speed. What they can do is prioritise a file they consider urgent for humanitarian reasons, and some accept a written request for expedited handling with evidence. That is discretionary, unpublished, and refused far more often than granted for tourism.
What VFS sells (premium lounge, prime-time appointments, courier, SMS) affects your experience at the centre. It has no effect on the consulate’s queue. We explain the boundary in what VFS actually does.
What actually makes a file fast
Speed comes from three things: an early appointment, a complete file, and the right consulate.
- Get the earliest appointment anywhere. VFS lets you apply at any centre in your consulate’s jurisdiction. If Mumbai is full for three weeks and Pune has a slot tomorrow, take Pune. Cancellation slots appear early morning and late evening; our slots-full guide covers the tactics that work.
- Submit a file that needs nothing. A request for additional documents restarts the clock in practice and adds 7 to 10 days. Statements stamped, insurance dated correctly, itinerary matching bookings, employer letter with return date. Our checklist by profile is the reference.
- Pick the consulate that is both correct and fast. Jurisdiction is not negotiable (main destination decides), but where a trip genuinely splits evenly between two countries, the first-entry rule gives you a choice. Germany and Italy have the largest processing capacity in India; small consulates take longer at peak.

The emergency exceptions, and how to use them
| Situation | Consulate response | What to submit |
|---|---|---|
| Serious illness or death of a close family member in Europe | Most consulates expedite, some decide in 2 to 3 days | Hospital letter or death certificate, proof of relationship, a one-page request for urgent handling |
| Medical treatment for you in Europe | Expedited with evidence | Hospital appointment confirmation, cost estimate, proof of payment or insurance |
| Business meeting, contract signing, trade fair | Sometimes expedited for established companies | Host-company invitation stating the date and why it cannot move, employer letter |
| Wedding, honeymoon, holiday, concert | No expedite. Standard queue | Apply early. There is no shortcut |
For a genuine emergency, email the consulate (not VFS) before your appointment with the evidence attached and ask for expedited processing. Then mention the email at submission and include a printed copy. Consulates do respond to real emergencies; they do not respond to “urgent” written on a tourist file.
A 5-day preparation plan for an urgent file
Days 1 to 2
Fix nights per country and identify the consulate. Check passport validity (3 months beyond return, 2 blank pages). Order stamped statements from the bank. Book the earliest appointment at any centre in the jurisdiction. Buy €30,000 insurance for the full dates.
Days 3 to 5
Refundable flights and hotels matching the itinerary. Employer letter with approved leave and return date. Cover letter that explains the timing honestly. Form filled to match every document. Submit with biometrics. Keep the courier option on so the passport comes back without a second visit.
Scams to avoid
- “Guaranteed visa in 7 days.” Nobody can guarantee a Schengen decision or its timing. Anyone who says otherwise is selling you a submission, not a visa.
- “We have contacts in the consulate.” No legitimate agent has influence over decisions. Files are decided by consular officers under the Visa Code.
- Slot resellers. Buying an appointment from a third party often means a booking made in someone else’s name, which VFS cancels at the counter. See the slot-scam section of our appointment guide.
- “Express fee” to VFS or the consulate. No such fee exists. The only official costs are the €90 visa fee and the centre’s published service charge.
If the dates cannot move and the visa will not come in time
Do not travel on a dummy booking hoping the visa arrives; airlines will not board you without the sticker. Do not submit a second application at another consulate while the first is pending; that is a refusal ground and it is visible in the shared database. The realistic options are to shift the trip, or to travel later on the visa you receive (a single-entry visa is valid for the dates the consulate sets, and you can request dates slightly wider than the trip in the form).
Dates fixed and the clock is running?
We build an urgent file in days, not weeks: jurisdiction, statements, bookings, cover letter, form and the earliest appointment we can find anywhere in your jurisdiction. Starting at ₹20,000 / $200 (GST included).
Frequently asked questions
Is there an express or urgent Schengen visa service from India?
No. The EU Visa Code sets a 15-day standard for everyone and consulates do not sell faster processing. VFS premium services affect the centre experience, not the decision time.
How fast can I realistically get a Schengen visa from India?
About three weeks door-to-door if you submit a complete file within five days and the consulate decides in the standard 15 days. Plan for four to five weeks.
Can a consulate expedite my visa for an emergency?
Yes, for genuine humanitarian reasons such as serious illness or death of a close relative in Europe, and sometimes for documented business urgency. Weddings and holidays are not treated as emergencies.
Does the VFS premium lounge speed up the visa?
No. It changes where you wait at the centre. The consulate’s processing queue is unaffected.
Can I apply at two consulates at once to be safe?
No. A second application while one is pending is a refusal ground and is visible to both consulates in the Visa Information System.
What is the minimum lead time to apply?
Applications should be lodged at least 15 working days before travel. Consulates may accept later filings but are not obliged to decide in time.
