When you book a Schengen appointment on a VFS Global website in India, you are often offered more than one kind of slot: a normal appointment, a Prime Time slot, the Premium Lounge, and on some country portals a Flexi Appointment. They all cost different amounts, and the booking pages rarely explain the one thing applicants most want to know: does paying more get my visa faster?
It does not. This guide explains what each option is, what it typically costs in India, and when it is actually worth paying for.
The one rule to remember
VFS add-ons change your experience at the centre, never the consulate’s decision or its speed. The visa is decided by the embassy under the EU Visa Code, normally within 15 days of receiving your file, whichever appointment type you booked. The only real time advantage a paid option can give you is an earlier submission date when normal slots are full.

The appointment types compared
| Type | What you get | Typical extra cost in India | Speeds up the decision? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal appointment | Standard slot during regular centre hours | None beyond the VFS service charge | No |
| Prime Time | Slot outside normal hours, usually early morning, late afternoon or select weekend times | About ₹2,800–3,150 per applicant (reported for Germany, France, Switzerland) | No |
| Premium Lounge | Separate lounge, dedicated staff, private counter, bundled extras such as photocopies, photos, SMS and courier | About ₹3,300–4,700 per applicant at Schengen centres | No |
| Flexi Appointment | A paid value-added service on some VFS country portals that gives you more choice of date and time | Varies by country and centre | No |

Fees are charged per applicant, include GST, are non-refundable even if the visa is refused, and change with exchange rates. Always check the current price on the VFS page for your destination country.
Prime Time: who it suits
Prime Time slots sit outside the normal 8 AM to 3 PM window. They are useful if you cannot take a day off, or if the normal calendar is full but Prime Time has earlier dates. They are a convenience purchase. The file goes to the same consulate queue as everyone else’s.
Premium Lounge: who it suits
The lounge is quieter, with a dedicated staff member who checks your documents at a private counter, and usually a same-day window to bring a missing document. It helps families with small children, senior citizens and anyone who wants a calmer visit. The meaningful benefit is that lounge slots sometimes exist when standard online slots are full, which can move your submission date earlier.
Flexi Appointment: what it means
“Flexi Appointment” is listed by VFS as a value-added service on some country websites. It lets you choose from a wider set of dates and times than the standard calendar shows. What exactly is included, and the price, differ by destination country and centre, so read the description on the specific VFS country page before paying. Like every other add-on, it does not change processing at the embassy.
When are new VFS appointment slots released?
There is no single public release schedule for Schengen appointments in India. Each consulate controls its own capacity, and patterns change. What we see consistently:
- Slots are added in batches, often weekly. Germany says new urgent-category slots are released weekly at short notice.
- Cancellations reappear at random times, so checking several times a day finds more slots than checking once.
- Peak season fills months ahead. Summer (April to August) and Christmas are the hardest; October to March is usually easier.
- Other cities help. Many consulates let you apply at any centre within their jurisdiction, and Germany accepts any VFS centre in India.

Is it worth paying for?
Worth it if
- Prime Time or Lounge shows an earlier date than any normal slot.
- You are travelling with young children or elderly parents.
- You cannot take leave during working hours.
Not worth it if
- You expect a faster visa decision. It will not happen.
- Normal slots are available on suitable dates.
- You think the lounge staff can improve a weak file. They check completeness, not your chances.
